The Challenge
The Challenge: Nepal's Higher Education Data Was a Mess
Choosing a college in Nepal used to mean months of guesswork. Students and families gathered information through:
- Visiting individual college websites — most of which were outdated, slow, or had missing information
- Calling college admissions offices, only to receive contradictory fee information
- Asking relatives and seniors for word-of-mouth recommendations
- Reading newspaper ads during admission season — which only showed what colleges wanted to advertise, not unbiased comparisons
The data problem was severe. Fees on college websites often didn't match actual admission brochures. Program names varied between institutions for essentially the same degree. Scholarship information was buried in PDFs or available only at physical offices. Admission deadlines for different programs were announced at different times with no central aggregation.
Compare this to the US, where The Common App centralized college applications for 1,000+ institutions, or Niche.com which aggregated millions of student reviews to create the most comprehensive college comparison platform in the world. Nepal had no equivalent — and the lack of reliable information was actively harming students' educational futures.
The data infrastructure challenge was equally difficult:
- No central database: Nepal's University Grants Commission had only partial data. Each college had to be contacted individually to verify information.
- Data freshness: Fee structures change every admission cycle. Program offerings evolve. A database built in Year 1 becomes inaccurate by Year 2 without an update mechanism.
- Review authenticity: Students with negative experiences are 5x more likely to leave reviews than satisfied students — creating a systematic negativity bias that needed to be designed around.
- SEO competition: For high-value searches like 'best BCA colleges in Nepal' or 'MBBS fees Nepal', ranking on Google required not just good content but fast load times and strong technical SEO.
Our Solution
Solution: Data Pipeline + Self-Serve College CMS + Elasticsearch
We solved the data problem at its root — building both the tools to collect accurate data and the mechanisms to keep it fresh. The approach mirrors how Zillow aggregated US real estate data from thousands of disparate sources into a single, trusted database.
1. College Data Pipeline
We built a data collection pipeline that scraped, normalized, and verified information from college websites, the University Grants Commission, the Nepal Medical Council, and other regulatory bodies. Manual verification calls were made to colleges for fee structures and program details that couldn't be automatically verified. Each data record is tagged with a 'last verified' date, and colleges receive a notification email every 6 months to review and update their listing. This combination of automated collection and manual verification gave us the most accurate higher education database in Nepal.
2. College Self-Service CMS
We gave each college a free account to manage their own listing on the platform. College admissions officers can update fees, add new programs, upload brochures, post admission deadlines, and respond to student reviews — all through a simple CMS without any technical knowledge. This 'claimed listing' model (identical to what Google My Business or Yelp does for local businesses) dramatically improved data accuracy because the colleges themselves had a stake in keeping their profiles current.
3. Elasticsearch for Intelligent Search
With 500+ colleges and hundreds of programs, a simple PostgreSQL query returns too many results in the wrong order. We built Elasticsearch indexing with fuzzy search (handles typos in college names), location-aware ranking (Pokhara-based searches surface Pokhara colleges first), and weighted relevance scoring. A student searching 'BBA computer college Butwal' gets the exact right results even if the college lists their program as 'BBA with Computer Application' — the same kind of intelligent search LinkedIn uses for job matching and Indeed uses for job discovery.
4. Verified Review System with Bias Controls
To address the negativity bias in reviews, we require phone number verification before posting a review, limit reviews to one per program per user, and weight review scores by recency (older reviews count less than recent ones). We also prompt graduating students with a 'How was your experience?' email 3 months after their expected graduation date — capturing the balanced perspective of completed students, not just disgruntled ones mid-course.
